Master Horitoshi I Will be in Secaucus, NJ Sept. 23 until Sept. 25
Tebori tattooing is such an ancient technique its history dates back to around the 18th century, and the various techniques used for creating these tattoos are complex and require years of apprenticeship. Because it’s a traditional art and not a sign of rebellion, the attitudes surrounding Tebori tattoos are more serious and personally reflective. They also tend to be “bodysuit” style, like the ones you see in the Japanese movies about the Yakuza mafia. Most people who get Tebori tattoos usually work with a tebori master, allowing them to have a piece of art permanently imprinted onto their body. And just in case you were wondering, the word ‘tebori’ loosely translates to “hand carving.”
Mario Barth’s Annual Tattoo Show in Secaucus, NJ, called Inked Out (sound familiar?), will be bringing the most sought after Tebori master in the world to this side of the globe the weekend of Sept. 23 until Sept. 25. All the way from Japan, his name is Master Horitoshi I, the head of the world famous Horitoshi Tattoo Family, and a close personal friend of Mario Barth. Horitoshi I is a master of the ancient Japanese tattoo technique, and he holds the secrets to many of the ancient techniques and mythologies of Japanese tattooing.
Horitoshi I began studying the craft when he was about 21-years-old in Tokyo and basically learned the art all by himself. It took him about 10 years before he could actually support himself as an artist and it took him even longer before he truly mastered the art. Today, Horitoshi’s son, Horitoshi II, runs and operates his own tattoo studio, while he has many deshi - or apprentices - under him learning the Tebori technique.

Ryan Brink Will Be Performing While Suspended - Hellaween Screamfest
Matt Arbaugh and Paul McFaddin of Escondido’s hard-rocking Caustic Felon have formed a new side band with Arbaugh’s son Mitch on drums, James E. Meidinger on guitar, and singer Ryan Brink. “Atropal is visual metal,” says Meidinger, “so we’ll be mixing grindcore music with live flesh suspension, with our lead singer Ryan Brink performing the suspension during the show.”
At six-foot-three and around 200 pounds, with tattoos covering 40 percent of his body and multiple piercings, Brink sings while suspended by four large shark hooks in his upper back. “The experience is one of nervous anxiety coupled with pain, culminating into a weightless feeling of euphoria as I’m lifted into the air,” he says. “It stretches the skin on my back to its tearing point, and then I begin to sway back and forth, which always gets the crowd going.”
Atropal debuts October 29 at Ramona Mainstage as part of Hellaween Screamfest. “In this age of piercing, body modification, subcutaneous inserts such as horns on the head or spherical bumps under the skin, you might think hanging from a thin metal wire with hooks in the body would be a bit more commonplace than it is,” says Meidinger. “But live-flesh suspension seems to remain a taboo thing. Most people have never seen anything like this done, and there are very few who risk their bodies to this particular activity, much less do it for public view.”
So, who do they expect to show up in Ramona? “There’s a huge subculture of people who are fascinated with this type of act, people who don’t necessarily fit into or even care to be a part of regular society.”
What Occupational Safety and Health Administration laws apply to such dangerous performances? “We searched the OSHA database and found no precedent for this act. In our case, the ritual is overseen by an A.P.P. [Association of Professional Piercers] - certified piercing instructor, Chris Glunt, our theatrical engineer.”
Meidinger admits the stage show will be “ominous and brutal. If we could, we’d throw battle axes at the audience!”
Also appearing at Hellaween Screamfest are Sweeteverafter, Contrary to Reason, Silent Vice, Her Bed of Thorns, and Judas Priest tribute Hell Bent.

Coney Island USA's Tattoo and Motorcycle Festival celebrates the great blue-collar arts of tattooing and of motorcycle customization. Started in the bad old days of 1986 when tattooing was still illegal in NYC, the Coney Island Tattoo and Motorcycle Festival is both the oldest gathering in New York City and brings together cutting edge New York City artistic innovation and attitude in the traditional home of the tattoo.
Every year, entrants compete for trophies as they show their tats in the Sideshow by the Seashore Theater or parade their motorcycles on West 12th Street before our panel of judges. Tattoos are judged in the categories of Black and White, Color, Tribal, Back and Butt, while Motorcycles compete in the categories of Custom, Stock, Oldest and Ugliest.
This year the Coney Island Tattoo and Motorcycle Festival will be honoring Crazy Philadelphia Eddie (a.k.a. Coney Island Eddie). Tattoo Art In the Philipines - Dutdutan
Dutdutan: (doot-doot-ahn) - a Tagalog word meaning to continually insert or jab.
Now on it’s 11th year, Dutdutan is now synonymous with tattoo art in the Philippines. At least that’s how a lot of tattoo enthusiasts in the country would like to view it.
For the 15,000 or so who congregated at the World Trade Center in Manila on August 26 and 27, the biggest tattoo show this side of the earth is also a definition of the alternative lifestyle that they have chosen.
But according to the organizers, tattoo art was not always part of the alternative scene. Native Filipinos have a rich history of tattoo art dating back to pre-colonial dates. In fact, when the Spaniards first got here, they were greeted with a heavily tattooed Visayan tribe and they called the islands “La Isla De Los Pintados” meaning the “Island of the Painted Ones.”
Christianity and western culture eventually supplanted that practice and not until we fast forward to the 90s do we see the rebirth of skin art.
The man and talent behind that is Ricky Sta. Ana, who started the yearly gathering with a small group of tattoo artists and customers. Eleven years later and supported by a major alternative lifestyle brand, Tribal Gear, the show has now taken on a bigger vision.
It is now a convention, known in the skin art circle around the world and they are even able to bring in the best tattoo artists from around the world to prove that. Underlying this achievement is the organizers’ cause to eliminate the stigma of skin art as taboo, since it has always appealed to the rebel crowd and the unconventional.
The Second Annual Wildwood Tattoo Beach Bash
The Second Annual Wildwood Tattoo Beach Bash (Atlantic City, New Jersey), presented by Rebel Image Tattoo, takes place Friday, September 9 through Sunday, September 11 inside the Wildwoods Convention Center Exhibit Hall – an event perfect for tattoo enthusiasts, as well as those interested in the unique art form of tattooing and body art design.
The Wildwood Tattoo Beach Bash will bring the body art community to the Wildwoods for a weekend full of events. The ‘bash’ will host major national tattoo artists, as well as activities including: tattoo contests, a traveling tattoo museum, seminars, art exhibits, door prizes and more. Celebrity tattoo artist Tim Hendricks from TLC's New York Ink will be in attendance at the event.
It all comes down to who is going to be there. The Wildwood Tattoo Beach Bash has confirmed that many great names in the industry will be in attendance. Philadelphia Eddie (Crazy Eddie) very well known in the Wildwood are, and also world famous, will be at the show signing his books, Eddie is an Icon within the industry.
Tim Hendricks of Saltwater Tattoo who is a celebrity artist on TLC's NY Ink and he'll be tattooing on a walk-up basis. Also tattooing at the convention will be Bob Tyrrells out of Detroit. Bob Tyrrells has done work on Kid Rock, and is a highly esteemed traveling artist who previously worked under the legendary Tom Renshaw. When asked by bikeweek.com about rumors that Corey Miller might show, Siderio declined to confirm or deny the possibility.
Also, be sure to check out the rarely seen Japanese Hand Method of Tebori Tattooing on display. Hours for the Wildwood Tattoo Beach Bash are: Friday, September 9 – Noon-10 p.m.; Saturday, September 10 – 10 a.m. -10 p.m.; and Sunday, September 11 – 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Paul Booth's 'The Grand Reincarnation' Tattoo Event
World-famous tattoo artist Paul Booth has just announced more special details on 'The Grand Reincarnation' events taking place on July 22nd, 23rd and 24th at his Last Rites Gallery & Tattoo Theatre, located on the 3rd floor at 511 West 33rd Street in New York City. 'The Grand Reincarnation' events are in celebration of the recent re-building and evolution of the gallery and theatre.
The second evening of the event is when Booth will open the Tattoo Theatre area of the space. Making a special trip all the way from Budapest, Attila Csihar, vocalist from the infamous band Mayhem, will present his solo dark ambient project Void Ov Voices. Since 1992, Attila has been the lead vocalist in the influential Norwegian black metal band Mayhem and since 2004 he has been the permanent guest vocalist for the doom/drone metal band Sunn O))). Csihar states the concept behind Void Ov Voice is to use "only my voice as an instrument via a loop machine and effects."
Sunday brings a great time to wind things down with a gathering of talent from Booth's family of artists to paint live at Last Rites. This is a great opportunity to witness these masters bring their stunning creations to life right before your eyes. Ther previous record was 3,100, Robinson aimed to do 3,600, but settled at 3,200. The piercings went on sideshow performer Staysha Randall and the record is awaiting verification by Guinness to be official.

Russ Foxx (Vancouver Body Art and Modification Artist) Suspension
He kneels in front of his crowd, securing the two stainless steel fish hooks in his back to the pulley rigged to the ceiling. The music starts, loud and vibrant, and he is lifted to a standing position. He runs and kicks his feet off the ground until he is swinging back and forth through the air, suspended only by the flesh of his back as it stretches and bends over the hooks that hold him. To make his point, he picks up a man twice his own 160 lbs. and holds him off the ground in a bear hug, his skin resilient, holding the weight of them both. He swings by himself a few seconds more before he cuts himself loose, dropping to his feet again to the roar of the crowd.
For Russ Foxx, a Vancouver body art and modification artist, body suspension is a career, and a way of life. Not only is it a way for him to express himself, he said, it’s a means of helping others discover themselves through a unique and personal experience.
Body suspension originates from ancient Native American and Hindu cultures. Suspension experts who maintain www.suspension.org write that the practice has been going on for thousands of years as rites of passages, healing rituals and as a means of leaving the body and entering the spiritual realm. One notable Native American ritual is the Sundance ritual, in which the person is pierced through the chest and attached to a sacred tree. The person then pulls and dances until the piercing rips free.
Today, Foxx said, most people suspend to gain some sort of experience, whether it be to overcome fears, to gain a new level of understanding spiritually or just for the sheer endorphin release.
When Foxx does private suspensions, it’s usually for first-timers. Foxx encourages everyone to create their own ritual to make the experience more significant, whether it’s using certain lighting or music during the suspension or having certain people present.
According to Foxx, the physical and mental preparation by the suspensionist is the most important part in the prep stages.
“For me as a facilitator, there isn’t a whole lot…to do,” he said. “I already own the equipment. I’ve got it set up. It’s more about the person suspending making sure they’re going to be in a healthy physical and mental state for it, making sure they’ve slept, they’ve eaten (and) they know what they’re getting into.”
Foxx said he is most comfortable when performing public suspensions through his show, The Human Tacklebox. For him, something that is already fun becomes amplified when a crowd of people is watching.
Those who have never tried it often don’t understand the appeal, and though each individual suspends for various reasons, Foxx gets a lot of people suspending for the sheer adrenaline rush.
The body undergoes several stages of pain between preparation and suspension, said Dr. Sekhar Upadhyayula, a pain medicine specialist.
There’s a certain amount of residual pain taking place after the hooks have been inserted into the skin, Upadhyayula said, along with a quick burst of adrenaline. But as soon as there’s traction applied, the nerve endings in the skin’s stretch receptors respond, adding another burst of pain.
Then what we expect to happen chemically…is a secondary release of endorphins. This lasts a lot longer than the pain and that’s the sensation that they’re looking for. That’s when they get the euphoric effect.”
Suspension is most popular among people who are involved in body modification. There's an increase in interest among those in the tattoo community, said Katee Cavallaro, a Florida tattoo apprentice. Many people who are interested in suspension ask their tattoo artists for direction.

Vampire Woman is taking Over the World
Maria Jose Cristerna better known as the "Mujer Vampiro" (Lady Vampire) is shown in this photo. The 35-year-old mother of four from Mexico says that she decided to tattoo her body after enduring years of domestic abuse. "The horns I have are a symbol of strength and were implanted without anaesthetic," she told the British Sun. Cristerna claims that almost 100 percent of her body is covered in tattoos.
